Gonzalo Higuain to Arsenal was nailed on, he was going to be the club's first huge signing of the summer. The deal would be done early and then allow plenty of time for him to settle and the club to look at other exciting targets too. Except that didn't happen.
Real Madrid moved the goalposts on price, which is entirely their prerogative, and Arsenal weren't prepared to play ball at higher figures. Napoli, loaded with the money from Edinson Cavani, rode into town and got the deal done rapidly compared to how it had all been dragging out all summer.
The fair assumption to make is that Arsenal simply didn't think the player was worth what Napoli paid, but Higuain insists he chose the club over Arsenal and Juventus. Of course he would say that, but Higuain is quoted by Le10
as explaining "Arsenal and Juventus ? I spoke with my Argentinian friends who played in Naples before, and they told me positive things about the city and the fans, so I decided to come here. This is a growing team and the San Paolo is a mythical stadium. I am happy and proud to be part of this team."
With their additions, Napoli will be hoping to put up a fight for the Serie A title this season. Despite losing Edinson Cavani they are arguably a stronger team, and the spending doesn't look like it's about to stop just yet.
Higuain could have been making similar comments about Arsenal had he completed his move to London and Arsenal fans will hope they get future targets wrapped up more quickly in future.
