The front page of Catalan paper Sport today leads with a picture of David Luiz along with the headline “The new Puyol.”
Sport claim Barcelona have narrowed down their central defender search to Chelsea crowd favourite David Luiz.
After signing Neymar, the La Liga champions are keen to strengthen their defence and Luiz fits the bill of a huge talent with plenty of Champions League and international experience.
Luiz, who is comfortable in possession and strong in the air, is exactly the type of defender Barcelona are looking for and Sport claim his friendship with Neymar may also help seal the deal.
Barcelona are tipped to bid 25 million euros for Luiz who is contracted at Chelsea until 2017 and earns around 6 million euros a season at Stamford Bridge.
Key to the whole move is how Jose Mourinho views Luiz with the Portuguese coach set to be named officially as Chelsea boss in the coming days.
The Catalan giants were interested in Luiz before he left Benfica but the Brazilian is now a crowd favourite at Chelsea and was hugely impressive in the latter part of the last campaign with some excellent performances in defence and midfield under Rafa Benitez.
