Manchester United are on the verge of closing a deal to bring Cristiano Ronaldo back to Old Trafford, according to the Daily Star.
In a far-fetched but detailed story, the paper claims that the very public pursuit of Barcelona’s Cesc Fabregas has been a smokescreen for 12 days of careful negotiations to put the deal in place.
The reports say United made their move when it became clear that Real Madrid were determined to sign Gareth Bale this summer. An enquiry is said to have been made on the basis that Ronaldo had not yet agreed to extend his Real contract, which expires in 2015.
When Real president Florentino Perez sought reassurances from Ronaldo that he would be signing a new deal at the Bernabeu, the Portuguese star said he would be keen to return to United at some stage. That has convinced the Spanish giants to sell now while his stock is at its highest, the Star claims.
Ronaldo’s mammoth wage demands would be partially off-set by him becoming a global ambassador for United’s sponsors General Motors, and particularly the Chevrolet brand.
And the report suggests that the only hold-up in Wayne Rooney’s move to Chelsea is that United wanted to have a marquee signing of their own in the bag before selling him.
Are you buying any of this , folks?
